"Actors" & "Actresses"

Watched part of the "Screen Actors Guilds" awards on TV tonight...didn't stay long, trust me. I did stay long enough to see some of the female participants introduce themselves as, are you ready for this, "actors." Now don't get me wrong. They were very attractive "actors" with their low cut dresses, voluminous breasts and, of course, an average age under 30. I was not fooled into thinking they were men. I knew immediately they were females! Yet they insisted of trying to continue the charade of presenting themselves as "actors." What is it with our society today with these "gender-less" appellations. "Actor," "Flight Attendant," "Congressperson," and one of my personal favorites, "layperson."  I wonder if Elizabeth Taylor would have referred to herself as an "actor?" Of course, the reverse side of that is I AM sure that Nancy Pelosi does refer to herself as a "Congress person" (when she's not referring to herself as "Minority Leader"). I know the impetus for this silly unisexal designations, it the whole equal rights, anti discrimination goofiness that washes over all of us today. Well, I'm not going along with it. I'm going to refer to hot chick that act as "actresses" and studly guys that do the same as "actors." So there!

Australia's Got It Right

Surfed into some TV coverage of the Australian Open 2011 tennis tournament . Included pretty good shots of the Rod Laver Arena at Melbourne Park where the matches are being played. It 's named and prominently/permanently signed in honor of  "Rod Laver," Australian tennis icon from late '60's. Struck me when I saw it, how respectful and powerful branding of a site it was, versus the hodgepodge of transparently commercial name tags big bucks naming rights sponsors have slapped on U.S. sports venues. "Minute Maid Stadium" (Houston-MLB), "American Airlines Center"(Dallas - NBA) and Staples center"( Los Angeles -NBA), etc. NOTHING to do with the sport(s) being played inside. Realize venue upkeep has significant costs, but it's nice to see some venues that want to hew to individual competitive context, rather than sell, sell sell. I'll bet the added naming-rights income didn't go to reducing ticket prices!

Will Chinese Mega Mall Squeeze Bangkok's Small Thai Merchants?

Maybe they'll take a page from America's small town retailers in their battles with BIG BOX store invasions ... focus on differentiation and connection to their customers...the big boys can't do that, whether they're Wal Mart or Chinese mega mall, "Platinum Fashion Mall"
